We, the members of TAHO, unite to promote animal health and welfare. The livestock sector in Tanzania significantly contributes to the national economic growth, given the country's substantial population of domesticated animals. However, the sector faces various challenges that hinder its ability to achieve its full potential. These challenges include:
1. Disease control: Effective management and prevention of livestock diseases remain a critical issue, affecting productivity and the overall health of the livestock population.
2. Breed improvement: Maintaining and enhancing the quality of livestock breeds is essential for improved production efficiency. Yet, this requires concerted efforts in genetic improvement and breed selection in the wake of animal health and welfare services.
3. Nutrition: Providing adequate and balanced nutrition is crucial for high meat, milk, and other livestock product yields. However, gaps in knowledge and resources need to be addressed.
4. Coordination among stakeholders: The livestock sector involves multiple stakeholders, including farmers, government agencies, and private enterprises. Proper coordination and collaboration among these parties are vital for the sector's development.
TAHO aims to address these challenges by collaborating with the efforts of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries (MLF) to develop the livestock sector. By leveraging the existing gaps, TAHO seeks to enhance the sector's contribution to national GDP from 7% to 9% within 3 years.
